Dubai International Airport, more commonly referred to as Dubai Airport, is the primary airport in Dubai. The airport handled 47 million passengers in the year 2013 (the latest available figures) up from 44.2 in 2012 and 42.3 million in 2011 making it the busiest airport in the Middle East region based on total passenger traffic. Upon this achievement, the authority is aiming at reaching 55 million passengers annually by 2015 with an ultimate target of 100 million passengers annually by 2020. Some experts consider an annual traffic of 75-80 million passengers a reasonable level of long term growth for Dubai Airport.

The Dubai International Airport is the largest airport in the world. The construction of this airport was started in 1960s and was completed in 19 years. The total cost of the project was around $4 billion, which is equivalent to $20 billion today.

The total cost of the project includes all the expenses incurred while building and maintaining the airport. It includes materials that were used for construction as well as infrastructure facilities like electricity supply and water supply system. The total area of this airport is about 2,500 acres, which is equivalent to 3,500 football fields combined together!

The land where this airport was built belongs to Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum and he used his personal funds to build this airport. He also provided all the land required for building this huge structure.

The construction of this airport began with a small terminal which housed only one plane at a time. Later on, more terminals were added to accommodate more passengers visiting Dubai every day.

Dubai International Airport is the busiest airport in the world in terms of international passenger traffic, and is also the second busiest airport in the world. The airport is located in Deira, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Dubai International Airport was built in 1962 and opened in 1968 with a capacity of 3 million passengers per year. In 1997, the terminal was expanded to handle 10 million passengers per year. To cope with increasing demand, a new terminal building was constructed which opened on 1 October 2003 and increased capacity to about 24 million passengers per year. A further expansion opened in 2007, bringing capacity up to 30 million passengers per year. Further plans call for another expansion — this time doubling capacity to 60 million passengers per year by 2020-2021 according to the Dubai Airports website as of January 2010[1].

The total cost of building Dubai International Airport was $6 billion USD as estimated by American University economist Bijan Khajehpour at a recent conference on “Economic Development and Urban Planning” held at American University on February 11th & 12th 2010.[2] The cost of building Dubai International Airport has been estimated at $27 billion USD.
