The Biltmore House was built as a secondary home to accommodate the large social gatherings of George Washington Vanderbilt II (1862 – 1914). Many members of the Vanderbilt family had homes on Fifth Avenue in New York City or at Newport, Rhode Island; however they all spent summers at their main residence: Idle Hour (now known as Oak Hill) in Lenox. Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains region was chosen for this purpose because it was cooler than New York City or Newport during those months
