The size of your barn door will depend on how much space you have in your closet or entryway. You can either measure the width and height of your opening, or simply estimate how much space you will need for the door itself (including its frame). If you’re installing it yourself, I recommend measuring both width and height first so that you know exactly how much wood you’ll need. You’ll also want to measure the thickness of your frame material (usually around 1-3/4″ thick) before ordering any lumber from a hardware store or lumberyard.

Making a barnyard door is a fairly simple project that requires only basic carpentry knowledge and access to some tools. You will need:

1) Two 2x6s cut into 4 foot lengths (these will become the sides of your barn door).

2) One 2×4 cut into 3 foot lengths (this will become the top rail of your barn door).

3) Four 2x4s cut into 1 foot lengths (these will become support beams for your barn door).

4) One 2×4 cut into 5 feet long (this will become the bottom rail of your barn door).

5) One 1/8 inch thick piece of plywood cut into 2 feet by 4 feet long (this will become the top panel of your barn door).
