Eddie Vedder is an American musician, singer and songwriter. He is best known as the lead vocalist and one of three guitarists of the alternative rock band Pearl Jam.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pearl Jam on April 7, 2017.

Early life

Eddie Vedder was born Edward Louis Severson III in Evanston, Illinois, to Karen Lee Vedder (née McCready) and Edward Louis Severson Jr., both social workers. He has two younger half-brothers: Chris and Kevin. He lived in Evanston until age 8 when his family moved to San Diego, California. There he met Andrew Wood and became friends with him. In 1988, they formed Green River with Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, later adding Mike McCready to their line-up. Ament described the band’s sound as “loud, fast, barre chord punk music.”

In 1990, Vedder moved back to Chicago where he took up work at a Columbia Records store; he spent his free time writing material that would make it onto the band’s debut album Ten (1991).

Vedder left San Diego, California in 1980 with $75 in his pocket and hitchhiked to Seattle, Washington. He had been playing drums in various San Diego bands since he was a teenager; his first serious band being Mission Impossible. He then worked at Starbucks as a barista after attending Seattle Central Community College, before gaining work at the Snake River Cafe in Seattle’s Old Town district . While working at the cafe he met Andrew Wood who worked behind the counter at the same establishment and was also a member of Mother Love Bone. After Andrew Wood died by overdose of heroin on March 19, 1990 , Vedder quit Starbucks and started playing music with fellow ex-Starbucks employee Jeff Ament on bass guitar and vocals after meeting Ament through mutual friend Greg Gilmore who lived across from Vedder’s apartment .

Man on the Moon: The End of Day is the second studio album by American rock musician Eddie Vedder. It was released in 2000 on Epic Records, and produced by Tchad Blake.

The recording process for Man on the Moon took place over two years, and marked a change in Vedder’s musical style from punk rock to folk. Vedder has said that he recorded the album in his kitchen after his family went to bed at night. The album featured contributions from Pearl Jam bandmates Mike McCready and Stone Gossard, as well as singer-songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman and jazz saxophonist Kenny G.

Man on the Moon was released to critical acclaim upon its release; Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine praised it as “perhaps the most personal album of his career”. The album reached number 21 on Billboard 200 chart and number five on Top Rock Albums chart. The single “Hard Sun” was also nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at 2001 Grammy Awards.

Eddie was born in Evanston, Illinois, on December 23, 1964. His father was a contractor, and his mother was an elementary school teacher. Eddie grew up with two sisters and three brothers. His family moved to San Diego when he was 11 years old.

When Eddie was 16, he lost his best friend in a car accident. This experience affected him deeply and inspired him to write “Alive,” a song from Pearl Jam’s debut album Ten (1991).
