Gigafactory cost to build
Gigafactory 2016: Tesla’s $5 Billion 10-Year Plan For Perfecting Elon Musk’s Batteries
Tesla, the California-based electric vehicle manufacturer, plans to build a gigantic battery factory in the state that is said to cost $5-$10 billion. The Tesla Gigafactory will make several batteries for Tesla’s Model 3 and other products that the company may produce in the future. Currently, four states are being considered as potential sites for the factory: Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Texas.
Gigafactory cost to build
Tesla’s Gigafactory is a bold venture into the world of battery production. The Nevada facility will eventually produce batteries for Tesla vehicles, as well as Powerpacks and Powerwalls for home use.
Tesla’s Gigafactory is the largest building in the world by footprint, but it’s not even close to being the tallest structure on Earth. However, it certainly is one of the most expensive buildings ever built.
According to an estimate by CNBC, it cost $5 billion to build and will cost $6 billion to operate over its first 10 years of operation. That’s nearly $1 billion per year!
That figure includes all capital costs (construction) as well as operating costs such as utilities, labor and maintenance — which amounts to a whopping $1 billion every year over 10 years.
The gigafactory was built with an eye toward sustainability and resource efficiency — which means there are solar panels on the roof that generate around 1 million kWh per year (enough energy for about 500 homes). It also has a geothermal heating system (groundwater from the nearby Snake River feeds through pipes under the factory floor before returning through another set of pipes deep underground).
The Tesla Gigafactory is a battery production factory owned by Tesla, Inc., which is building in Nevada, U.S.. Construction began on September 2014 and was completed on July 2017. The factory’s construction cost $5 billion by the time of its completion and when fully operational is expected to be the largest building in the world by footprint at 5.8 million square feet (540,000 m2), almost twice as large as the next biggest building, Boeing’s Everett Factory.
The facility produces lithium-ion battery cells, modules and packs for Tesla’s electric vehicles, including Model 3, Powerwall 2 and Powerpack 2 energy storage products. It also produces drive units for Model S, Model X and Model 3 vehicles as well as battery packs for SolarCity solar panels.
In May 2016 it was reported that Panasonic had negotiated a deal with Nevada officials where Tesla would get up to $1.25 billion in tax breaks if it met certain conditions related to job creation and capital investment over 10 years. The agreement required Tesla to invest $3.5 billion in capital expenditures over 10 years and employ 6500 people at an average salary of $22 an hour by 2024. If these targets were not met then tax abatements would begin phasing out after 2024
The Tesla Gigafactory cost is around $5 billion, but the company says that it will save $150 million per year with its size and scale.
Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2020 and be completed by 2022 or 2023. The plant will be powered by renewable energy from nearby solar panels and wind turbines.
Tesla has not yet released details about the cost of building the factory itself, but we can use our knowledge about how batteries are produced to estimate what that might cost.
In 2018, Bloomberg reported that a battery factory in China costs about $4,000 per kilowatt-hour of capacity. That means that building a gigawatt-scale factory would cost about $4 billion (1 Gigawatt = 1 Billion Watts).
The Tesla Gigafactory produces batteries at an estimated cost of $190 per kilowatt-hour, which means that it only costs $1,900 per kilowatt-hour to build a gigawatt-scale factory (1 Gigawatt = 1 Billion Watts).
The Tesla Gigafactory is the world’s largest lithium-ion battery plant. It’s not only going to help Tesla meet its target of 500,000 electric cars by 2020, but also cut costs for battery production by 30%. The first Gigafactory started in 2015 and is located outside Reno, Nevada.
In 2016, Tesla announced that it would be expanding the factory and building a second one in China. The new location will be built in Shanghai Lingang New City at an estimated cost of $5 billion. In July 2018, Tesla signed an agreement with the Shanghai government to build the factory there. The company plans to invest $2 billion in this facility and create 6,500 jobs over 10 years.
Gigafactory 1: History
The original plan was for Tesla to build four battery factories around the world and produce up to 500,000 cars per year by 2020. In November 2014, the company announced plans for a massive facility near Reno, Nevada (Gigafactory 1). The factory was expected to open in 2016 but got delayed due to construction issues which caused delays in opening date several times. However, as of 2019, it has produced more than 250 million cells per year
The Tesla Gigafactory is a battery factory in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, about 20 miles east of Sparks, Nevada.
The factory is currently under construction and expected to be fully operational by 2020.
Tesla plans to produce lithium-ion batteries at the facility at a rate of 500,000 per year. This will allow Tesla to produce batteries for its cars and powerwalls at an unprecedented scale.
The factory will also be used to manufacture some of the other components that go into Tesla’s vehicles, such as motors, gearboxes and chargers.
The company expects the facility will employ more than 6,500 people by 2024.
The Tesla Gigafactory is a lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility located in the Sparks, Nevada. It was co-founded by Tesla Motors and Panasonic in 2014. The factory is currently being built in phases and once fully operational, it will produce more lithium-ion batteries annually than were produced worldwide in 2013.
The Tesla Gigafactory has been designed to be a net zero energy facility on an annual basis. It will produce low cost batteries for its electric vehicles, grid storage applications and residential battery packs to power homes and businesses. The factory is expected to reduce the per kilowatt hour cost of battery packs by more than 30 percent and create thousands of jobs in Northern Nevada. The project has attracted about $1 billion in economic development investment since construction began in 2014.
How much does a gigafactory cost?
The total cost of building the Tesla Gigafactory is expected to be $5 billion over 10 years (or $500 million per year). Of this amount, Panasonic has agreed to invest $1.6 billion into the project over several years while Tesla’s investment will be about $3 billion over 10 years (or $300 million per year).
The gigafactory is Tesla’s massive battery manufacturing plant, which is currently under construction in Nevada. The company broke ground on the factory in June 2014, and it hopes to be fully operational by 2020.
In 2015, Tesla filed a permit application with the State of Nevada for $1.3 billion worth of construction materials for its battery factory project. However, Tesla hasn’t officially provided an estimate on how much it expects the gigafactory to cost.
Why does Tesla need a gigafactory?
The short answer: to produce enough batteries for its electric vehicles (EVs).
Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has said that he believes EVs will eventually replace internal combustion engines as the primary form of transportation — and his company wants to be at the forefront of this transition away from fossil fuels. But before EVs can truly take off in popularity, there needs to be more charging infrastructure available for consumers who want one. That’s why Tesla has been investing so heavily in building out its network of EV charging stations around the world — including its own Supercharger network and Destination Charging locations at hotels and restaurants — as well as introducing new models like the Model 3 that are less expensive than previous
The gigafactory cost $5 billion to build and could employ 6,500 people. The building covers 10 million square feet, or 174 football fields.

The company expects the facility to be fully operational by 2020, with an estimated annual production capacity of 20 gigawatt hours (GWh) of lithium ion batteries by 2020. That’s enough batteries for 500,000 vehicles per year.
The plant is part of Tesla’s plan to increase production of its mass-market Model 3 vehicle from 100,000 units per year to 500,000 units per year by 2020. The company said it built the factory because other battery makers were unable to meet its demands for lithium ion cells — a key component in EV batteries. Tesla also claims that building its own factory will allow it to lower costs through economies of scale and improve quality control over every step of the manufacturing process.
