How to build a patio seating wall

The back yard of our home had become a bit disorganized. We had a few gardening tools, some pots and a lawn mower sitting there. We also had a very old A/C unit in the corner that for some reason still worked. To be honest, it looked like it was about to fall apart. Plus, the grass backed up all the way to it, so it wasn’t aesthetically pleasing either. I had enough of all this mess, that’s when we decided to clear out the entire backyard and start fresh.

The curved patio sitting wall can be built from cinder blocks or bricks and it’s designed to provide extra seating for your guests. It can also be used as a sitting bench or standing bench depending on how high you make the back section of the wall.

We used cinder blocks for our curved patio sitting wall but bricks would work just as well if not better than cinder blocks in most applications because they are much more durable than cinder blocks which are prone to cracking over time when exposed to moisture and temperature changes.

Materials Needed For A Curved Patio Sitting Wall:

For our curved patio sitting brick wall design we used three 8”x16”x16″ cinder blocks (for each side) and one 16″x16″x16″ block (for the back). You may need less

If a patio is a place where you can relax, then why not make it more comfortable? You can do that by building a seating wall. A seating wall is basically a wall with spaces to sit in.

The best thing about having a seating wall is that it can double up as a barrier between your yard and the neighbours’. It can also help keep the kids from running out of your yard and into the street.

If you have an open space in your yard, then it is time for you to build yourself a sitting wall.

Prepare your materials

It is always better if you know what material you want in advance because this will help you plan things better. In this case, you need to decide whether you want cement block or concrete blocks for your patio sitting wall. Both materials are durable and long lasting but they differ in price and ease of installation.

Once you have decided on the material, get enough blocks or cement blocks so that they cover the entire area of your patio sitting wall. How to Build a Sitting Wall - This Old House

1. Start by marking out the top of your wall with stakes and string. The string should be level and run from one end of your patio to the other. Make sure it is taut (but not too tight) so that it doesn’t move when you start digging.

2. Dig out the ground for your wall by removing soil by hand or with a shovel or spade.

3. Mix concrete in a wheelbarrow according to instructions on the bag or mix it in a concrete mixer if you have one available. Pour some concrete into siting pads (these are pads that allow concrete to settle before it hardens). These are usually made from plastic or metal but can also be made from wood covered in plastic sheeting. Place these pads at intervals along your desired layout so that they will support each other when they dry out and become heavy enough to hold up the next layer of brick or stone blocks (see step 4).

4. Lay bricks or stones on top of each pad, making sure that the joints between each block are tight so that water cannot get into them and cause damage over time.

A curved sitting wall is a great way to add some style to your patio or deck. The concept is simple – you’ll need to build a curved wall that has places to sit. The curve in question can be any shape, though the most common designs are semicircles and rounded corners.

The curved sitting wall can be made from many different materials, including concrete blocks, brick or stone. It’s also possible to use lumber, though this option isn’t as durable as some other materials.

If you’re looking for an easy DIY project with a big impact on your home’s appearance, then building a curved sitting wall might be right up your alley.

Step 1: Prepare the site. The first step in building a patio seating wall is to prepare the site. This means laying down a base of compacted gravel or wood chips, and leveling it out.

Step 2: Build the cinder blocks. Lay out the foundation blocks to form a rectangle that’s at least 4 feet wide, and as long as you want your wall to be. Use a level to make sure they’re all even with each other.

Step 3: Place mortar between each block. Once your blocks are laid out, mix up some mortar according to the directions on your bag (there’s no substitute for good mortar). Use a trowel to put mortar into all of the spaces between each block until they’re filled up completely.

Step 4: Build up from there. Continue adding cinder blocks until you’ve reached whatever height you want your wall to be at — usually around 6 feet is enough for most people. You can also leave it shorter if you prefer something more petite!
