I thought to myself, “We need some kind of guide for people in my situation.” That’s when I started researching and wrote my step by step eBook: How to Build a Root Cellar on Flat Ground .

- Pour roof in sections, allow to fully cure, then backfill with soil.
5. Install Ventilation & Insulation
- Add intake and exhaust vents for airflow to reduce ethylene buildup and mold .
- Ensure vents can be closed for winter to retain 32–40°F temps.
- Maintain 80–95% relative humidity with gravel floor or damp earth .
6. Final Touches
- Create a tight-sealing door to minimize light and temperature exchange .
- Ensure proper backfilling around walls with drainage—use a curtain drain to divert water.

Cover the frame with tar paper or roofing felt to protect against moisture getting into the wood from below through capillary action (this won’t keep out moisture if it rains hard directly on top of the wood though so make sure there’s at least 18 inches of soil between your frame and ground level).
