The screens on the porch help keep out flying insects, but they aren’t airtight. If you live where bugs and insects are an issue, it is possible to screen in a deck without a roof and create a fully enclosed space.

How to Screen in a Deck Without Roof
Building a screened porch on top of your existing deck is a great way to add additional living space, but it’s not as simple as just attaching screens to the deck. To make sure you’re doing it right, follow these steps.
Measure and cut the base rails
Measure and cut the base rails for your new porch. Base rails are the lowest part of any railing system and provide a place for balusters or posts to sit. You can buy premade base railings from your local home center or lumberyard, or you can build them yourself from pressure-treated lumber and metal brackets.
Attach the base rails
Attach the base rails to the underside of your deck using metal brackets or screws. The brackets should be placed every 6 inches along each side of each rail, and they should be spaced so that there’s at least 1 inch between them and any vertical support post (see Photo 1). If you’re using screws instead of brackets, drill pilot holes through the horizontal members (not through any vertical support posts) and drive 5/8-inch screws into them until they penetrate at least 1 inch into the wood (Photo 2).
A screened-in porch is a perfect place to enjoy the outdoors without having to worry about bugs and other pests. Building your own screened-in porch on a deck or patio can be a fun project for the whole family.
If you’re not looking for a permanent structure, you can build one that’s easy to take down when it’s time to store it away for the winter months.
If you’re looking for something more permanent, such as a screened-in porch with roof, there are many options available to help you get started.
Building Your Own Screened-In Porch
Step 1: Cut the Screening
Cutting the screening to length is the most difficult part of this project. If you have a variety of sizes and shapes of screening, cut them all to the same length first. Then cut each piece into smaller pieces that fit around any obstructions on your deck.
The best method is to use a straightedge and utility knife. If your deck has a railing or other obstructions, use a straightedge to draw a line along both sides of the obstruction and then cut along those lines using your utility knife.
If you want to seal your screening after installation, I recommend using silicone caulk because it’s easy to work with and dries quickly. You can also use polyurethane caulking for a longer-lasting seal, but it’s more expensive than silicone caulk and harder to work with.
If you don’t want to seal your screening at all (or if you live in an area where insects aren’t an issue), skip this step!
Here’s a step-by-step guide to building a screen porch on a deck, from framing and flooring to adding the roof.
1. Frame and build the foundation for the porch.
2. Install the decking boards for the floor.
3. Install the railing posts and balusters, then add the railing to finish off the deck.
4. Build up one side of your porch with 2x6s and attach it to the deck frame with corner brackets (if you’re building over an existing deck).
5. Install 2x4s horizontally between joists so you have something to attach your new screened wall to; nail them directly into place or use double-face nails for extra strength.
6. Cut out holes in your new wall for windows, doors or other openings; be sure to leave plenty of room around them so they can be easily accessed later on (at least 1/2″ on each side). If you’re working with an existing wall, cut holes in it now too (you’ll need these later on as well so that electrical outlets are accessible).
7. Add a layer of screen mesh over each opening in your new wall, then tack it into place using finishing nails or staples every 6 inches or so
How to Screen In a Deck With Roof
Screening in a deck is a great way to add privacy and make your outdoor space more enjoyable. You can screen in an existing deck or build a new one. If you’re thinking about screening in your deck, here’s what you need to know.
Screening in an existing deck:
If you want to create a screened-in porch without having to build a whole new structure (and if there’s enough room on your property), consider screening in an existing deck. This will give you easy access to the rest of your home, while still providing plenty of shade and privacy.
Screening in a new deck:
If you have an open space that needs fencing for privacy or safety reasons, building a screened-in porch may be the perfect solution. You can build around an existing structure or construct one from scratch. Either way, make sure that your design meets local codes and regulations before starting construction.
The best way to screen in a deck is to add a roof. Screening in a deck without a roof is possible but it’s not ideal.
If you want your deck to be fully enclosed and protected from the elements, then adding a roof is the way to go.
But if you just want some privacy from prying eyes, then screening in your deck is the answer.
Screening in your deck without adding a roof is possible. But it will only provide minimal protection from the elements and it won’t give you any privacy from outside noises or people passing by on the sidewalk or street.
Screening in a deck is a great way to add shade and protection from bugs, but what if your deck doesn’t have a roof? There are still ways you can create a screened-in feel on an uncovered deck.
Use plants as your privacy screen. Plants such as ivy, bamboo and bamboo palm can be grown up the sides of your deck posts to provide privacy without blocking out the light. Start with one plant at each corner of the deck and work your way in until you’ve covered all four sides.
Add lattice panels to create walls around the perimeter of your deck. You can find wooden lattice panels at most home improvement stores or garden centers. Simply screw them on or nail them into place along each side of your deck using long nails or screws. If you want to keep it simple, just use one panel for each side — this will allow plenty of light through while still providing some privacy and protection from bugs.
Add a door to enclose your deck if desired. If you have enough room, consider adding a door leading into the house so that you don’t have to go out onto the porch every time someone wants inside or outside! To do this effectively, consider adding an overhead door (or two) so that users
If you’re building a new deck, you may want to consider adding a screen. Screened-in decks are more appealing and comfortable than uncovered ones, and they also help protect your deck from the elements.
The basic process for adding a screen to an existing deck is similar to that for building a new one. You start by attaching the screen material (typically aluminum) to the outside of the existing structure. Then you install the frame and any doors or windows, which go inside the screen material. Finally, you connect everything with hinges and latches.
To learn how to add a screen to your existing deck, follow these steps:
1) Decide on a design for your screen enclosure. You can make your own plans or use those offered by many manufacturers and retailers of screening products. The most common designs include solid walls enclosing only part of the deck or open areas with no walls at all. 2) Decide whether you want a solid wall or an open area with no walls at all for your enclosure. If you’re enclosing only part of the deck — say, just one end or one section — then you’ll need only enough screening material (aluminum) to cover that area; otherwise,
One of the best things about a screened-in porch is that it can be used year-round. If you have kids, you know how important it is to have a safe place for them to play. You can provide that space with a screened-in porch. You can also add privacy and insulation to your home by installing a sunroom.
If you have an older home or one built before the invention of energy-efficient windows, adding a sunroom or screened porch will help insulate your home and make it more comfortable during the summer months. In fact, according to Energy Star, adding an additional room can reduce heating costs by up to 30 percent!
