How to build a small closet
Adding a closet to a small bedroom, or converting a small room into a closet can be done by framing it into the wall and insulating the walls before installing drywall. It’s important to use studs that correspond to the location of your closet so it can bear the weight of its contents.
Adding a closet is a great way to both create more storage for clothes and add value to a home that isn’t part of a renovation. Even if you’re simply adding it to an existing room, the process can be done relatively easily:
How to build a small closet
There are two ways to build a closet for a small bedroom. The first is to add a closet in an existing room, and the second is to frame a closet into the wall of an unfinished room.
The first option is simpler and less expensive than adding on a new room. It requires moving furniture and removing walls, which can be challenging if the existing house is old or has other structural issues.
The second option requires building a new wall inside your house that can support the weight of your new closet. This option is likely more expensive, but it will give you more storage space without taking up any floor space in your home.
Closets are great for small spaces because they help you store things you don’t use every day, but still need to keep close at hand. If you’re thinking about adding a closet to your home office or bedroom, here is how to do it.
Choose a Closet Location
The first step is to decide where you want the closet to be located. You have a couple of options:
In an existing room — If you have an empty space in an existing room, consider building a closet there. But make sure it’s big enough and tall enough to accommodate your clothes and other items.
In a new room — If you want more storage space, build a new room specifically for storage. This will give you plenty of extra square footage for all of your stuff!
If you’re building a small closet, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure that you have enough space for your clothes. If you don’t have enough room, the closet will be wasted space. Second, consider how much light will be needed in the closet. Third, decide whether or not you want to install drawers or shelves inside of your closet.
Here are some tips for building a small closet:
Measure the size of the room and take into account any doors or windows that will be affected by adding a closet. This will give you an idea of how much space is available for building a closet on the wall.
Consider how much light will be needed inside of your closet. You can install an electrical outlet if necessary so that lights can be added if needed after construction has been completed. A small closet doesn’t require as much lighting as other rooms in your home might need so this step may not be necessary if it does not have any windows or doors open to another area of your home where natural light could enter in through windows or doors.
how to add a closet to a small bedroom
The first step in building a closet is to determine the size of the space you have available. Measure the width and depth of the area where you want to build your closet, and add an additional 6 inches on all sides (for framing) to get a rough estimate of your available space.
Then, measure the length and height of your clothes, shoes and other items you want to store in the closet. This will give you an idea of how much hanging space you’ll need — including space for things like dresser drawers that won’t be hung up on bars or rods.
Once you have a rough idea of how much space you need for your closet, it’s time to decide if you want an attached or freestanding closet. Attached closets are usually built as part of an existing wall between two rooms; freestanding closets stand alone in one room with no adjacent walls. Attached closets can be more challenging because they often require more complicated framing techniques than freestanding closets do — but they’re often more convenient because there are fewer steps involved in finishing them once the framing work is complete.

Basic Closet Options
The most common type of closet is called a walk-in closet. It’s usually located in your bedroom or master suite and has plenty of hanging space for clothes, shoes and accessories. The biggest walk-in closets can hold up to 100 pairs of shoes!
If you’re looking for more organization than just hanging clothes, then consider adding shelves, drawers or even a bench seat into your closet design.

If you’re looking to add a closet to your home, you have a few options. You can build one yourself, hire a contractor to do it, or buy closet organizers that require no framing. But if you want to create a custom closet in an existing room, like a bedroom or bathroom, you’ll need to frame the walls and install drywall on the inside — which means cutting holes for electrical outlets and switches, cutting doors and windows, and making other important cuts.
Here’s what you need to know about framing a closet in an existing room:
1. Make sure there are no obstructions above the new walls — especially if you’re installing lights or outlets above the closets. You’ll need access for those items once the wall is framed out, so avoid hanging anything over the planned location of your new closet. If you can’t move these items now and later will be forced to cut through them with a saw blade or drill bit, make sure they’re not needed for safety (like smoke detectors).
2. Use studs when possible and nail them together with 16d nails into place before framing out your walls with 2x4s or larger lumber (depending on how much weight
When you move into a new home, you may discover that the closet space is inadequate for your needs. Or perhaps you’re renting and want to add storage without spending money on major renovations. Whatever the situation, adding a closet to an existing room is a relatively simple process. The key is to plan ahead so that you know how much space you’ll need for each item of clothing and how much room you’ll have left over for other items.
The first step is to measure the closet space. If it’s not built-in, measure the walls where they meet at right angles (such as corners) and note these measurements on paper. Then draw a rectangle around each wall section based on your measurements.
Next, decide how many shelves or hanging rods each shelf should have and what size they should be. Measure the distance between shelves or rods (or both) on existing closets in your home or elsewhere and use those measurements as guidelines when deciding how many shelves or rods you need per wall section. Once your shelf measurements are determined, add together all of the shelf lengths for each wall section to determine how many total feet of shelving will be needed for each section of wall.
Determine how many inches of clearance will be required between shelves or rods (or
The basic principle for framing a closet is to build the frame around the dimensions of the closet that you want to install. Once you have these dimensions, you can start planning the layout and how to build your closet system.
The first step is to get the rough opening onto your framing plan. You will need to know how far apart each stud needs to be spaced and how much space there is between each stud. This will help you lay out your plan for building the closet frame.
Once you have laid out all of your studs, check that they are spaced evenly and evenly within themselves (i.e., no gaps between two adjacent studs). Once this is done, use a chalk line to mark where your studs will go so they are level with each other and level with the floor or ceiling above them. If necessary, shim them up until they are level with each other and level with the floor or ceiling above them.

Next, cut each of your 2×4 boards into smaller pieces using a circular saw followed by a chop saw or jigsaw depending on what tools you have available at home or work. If all else fails, ask someone at a hardware store if they would be willing to cut all of these boards down for
The first step in framing a closet is determining where the closet will be located. Once you have decided on the location, you need to decide if you want to build a wall or just use a partition.
If you are using a partition, then you can install it directly over the existing wall.
If you want to build a wall, then make sure that the studs are deep enough to support your needs. If they are not deep enough, then you will need to add more studs and trim them out as needed when you are framing the walls.
Once your walls are framed out and ready for drywall installation, it is time to add insulation. If there is no insulation in your home, then this is an important step that should not be skipped over because it will save money on heating bills in the winter and cooling bills in the summer months.
After insulation has been added and dried out (usually takes at least 24 hours), it is time to put up plywood or drywall on both sides of each section of frame work that has been completed so far. This will create a smooth surface for drywall installation or painting later on down the road if that is what your preferences dictate
One of the biggest problems with closet space is that it’s often a hassle to add it. You have to tear down walls and ceilings, which takes time and money. But if you’re willing to work around your existing space, there are a few tricks you can use to make sure you have enough room for all your stuff without paying for a full-scale renovation.
Here are three ideas for adding closet space without breaking the bank:
1. Add a linen closet or linen cupboard in your bathroom. This is a great way to add extra storage without taking up valuable floor space in the rest of your room. Plenty of places sell pre-built versions, but you can also make one from scratch using an old door frame or sawhorse legs attached to an unfinished piece of lumber — just make sure it’s tall enough for your tallest towels or sheets!
2. Install under-the-bed storage bins in your bedroom. If you have a bed frame with space underneath it, put some stackable bins there so they won’t take up any floor space at all! You could even invest in some fabric bins with handles if you want something that looks nicer than plastic ones (just remember that they’ll be visible when the bed is pushed up against them
