It is important to lock all the windows on the inside of your home so that you do not have to worry about someone breaking in through them. There are many reasons why you may want to turn a window into a door. Perhaps the window is too small, or perhaps you want to create a more secure entrance to your home. You can use a number of materials to do this, including:

Plastic sheet. This can be cut or punched to shape and attached using double-sided tape. It will not last as long as other materials, but is cheaper and easier to install.

Metal sheet. This is also available in a variety of thicknesses and can be cut with tin snips or special tools. Metal sheeting is much more durable than plastic sheeting, but it is more expensive and needs more skill to install correctly.

Wooden boards. These can be bought ready-made at most DIY stores or home improvement centres, but they are often heavy and bulky to transport home from the store. They also require nails or screws for fastening them in place, which makes them unsuitable for use on windows that open outwards (e.g., French windows).

If you need to remove a window, but you don’t want to leave a hole in your wall, here’s how to make a door.

Remove the sashes. If your window has sashes (the top and bottom parts of the frame), remove them by prying them from their channels with a putty knife or other flat-bladed tool. If there are stops on the sides of the frame, mark their position with chalk so you can reinstall them later.

Remove the trim or casing. Remove any molding (trim) that covers the perimeter of the opening and nails holding it in place. This can be done with a hammer and chisel or sawzall if necessary (see “Cutting Trim” below). Remove any nails holding in place any other decorative woodwork such as baseboard surrounding the opening. It’s best not to cut through this wood because you may need it later when installing new casing around your new door (see “Cutting Baseboard” below).

If you want to make a door into a window, you can do it with some simple tools and supplies. You’ll need to make sure the door is painted and sealed before you start, and you should plan on having to repaint the door after installation.

First, remove the hinges from the door using a screwdriver or pliers. Yank them off so they will not come back on later.

Next, measure the length of your door from end-to-end and mark where you want your windows to be located with a pencil or marker.

Using your drill/driver and 3/16-inch drill bit, drill holes for each window location about 3 inches apart horizontally and vertically in both sides of the door frame at 2 inches down from the top edge (if you want more than one window). If you are only doing one window then make sure that it is centered on one side of the door frame by drilling a hole in each side of the frame about 3 inches apart horizontally and vertically in both sides of the door frame at 2 inches down from top edge (see diagram).

Take your 1 x 4 inch boards and place them inside your drilled holes on both sides of each drilled hole (see diagram).

If you’re looking for an easy and inexpensive way to make your home more energy efficient, consider converting one of your windows into a door. You can do this by installing double-paned glass with a storm door or patio door.

In order to make the most out of your new window/door, it’s important to understand how much heat will be lost or gained through the glass. To determine this, you need to know the R-value of the glass and its overall area.

The R-value is a measure of how well a material insulates against heat transfer. For example, if you have an R-value of 0.5 on your window frame and an exposed surface area of 2 square feet (0.2 m2), then your window will lose 1 British thermal unit (Btu) every hour per square foot (0 m2) of exposed surface area at 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 C).
