Starting a garden is a great way to get fresh veggies and save money, but the costs of buying a large hydroponic system, or equivalent, often hurts initial enthusiasm. My approach uses small easily transportable containers for indoor growing.
So you want to produce some food, but you don’t have much room. You’re also on a tight budget and grow boxes can be pretty expensive. If only there was a cheap way to grow some food on your balcony or in your backyard…
Small pallet planter box
Pallets are a great resource for making planter boxes. They’re free, sturdy, durable and easy to work with.
Here are some ideas for making pallet planters:
Pallet Planter Boxes
Make a simple box that can be used as a planter or raised bed. The box is made from two or three pallets placed end to end. This creates an enclosed area that can be filled with soil and plants. The height of the box depends on how tall you want your plants to grow. Use a saw to cut between the boards of each pallet at the height you want. Remove the nails holding together the boards with a hammer and pull them apart at the cut lines with pliers.
Use pallets in place of wood for building window boxes that fit into windowsills or other narrow spaces where growing plants would be useful. These boxes are typically built out of three pallets, but may also use just two when space is limited. The walls should be built out of 2-inch (5 cm) wide boards nailed together with 2-inch (5 cm) nails spaced every 6 inches (15 cm). Use 1 x 4 inch (2 x 10 cm) boards to make the bottom of your window box

This one uses 2×2’s instead of 2×4’s, which makes it much smaller in size but also lighter weight since there are less pieces involved overall (less nails). How to Build a Pallet Window Box. A window box is a great way to add color and texture to your home’s exterior. There are many ways to build a window box, but this project shows you how to make one out of pallets.
Step 1: Cut the Wood
Cut two boards from each pallet for the long sides of your window box. Use a circular saw or table saw for this step; it’s best not to use an electric jigsaw because of its tendency to leave rough edges on cut wood.
Step 2: Layout the Cross-Braces
Lay out your cross-braces so they fit between the two long sides you’ve already made, leaving enough room at either end for attaching them later with screws or nails. Drill pilot holes through these cross-braces so they will be able to hold up weight without breaking away from the sides of your window box when it’s finished.
Step 3: Attach Cross-Braces
Measure and mark where you want each cross-brace to go using your tape measure and pencil. Then drill pilot holes through each piece of wood before attaching them with screws or nails so they’ll hold together firmly once everything is assembled into one piece later on.
